Just having a bit of fun with Parliament of Australia data and Tableau.
Birthdays of all members of both the House of Representatives and the Senate were plotted against year and party affiliation. There are definitely some interesting observations, keep reading to find out.
…and for kicks, the birthdays were also converted to astrological signs and Chinese Zodiac.
The charts were built using Tableau Desktop. In our opinion, it’s decent tool for rapid prototyping visualisation ideas. Strangely enough, it almost feels an advantage to be working with Tableau’s quirks and limitations because it keeps the scope tight so the work is more likely to get finished (and finished quickly).
Bob Katter is the oldest member of parliament, the only one who was born in the 1940s. Only the two major parties have MPs born in the 1980s.
Overall, the Greens has the youngest team, with more than 40% of its senators born in the 1970s and 1980s. Jordan Steele-John (The Greens) is the youngest, born in 1994, 50 years younger than Derryn Hinch who is currently the oldest.
A great TED talk about the Chinese zodiac.
